Hamilton Zoo is home to a great range of animals including giraffes, zebras, tigers and cheetahs, plus a conservation park and free flight Avery. The location is easy to get to and the facilities beautifully maintained. It’s the perfect place to stroll around for a few hours with lots of great picnic spots and an onsite cafe.

Hamilton Hot Air Balloon Rides

Kiwi Balloon Company offers daily flights from Lake Rotoroa, from Lake Domain Drive in Hamilton. Travel over the city, farmlands and view the Waikato River from above.

Victoria Bridge

Hamilton’s most iconic bridge and one of six that links east and west Hamilton. Take a short walk over Victoria Bridge,  and head to Memorial Park where the Cenotaph has three memorials honouring the NZ Navy, Airforce and Army.

Hamilton Lake Domain

A fantastic recreational area with options for all. The park is centred around Lake Rotoroa, where you’ll find yachting, wind surfing, canoeing, paddle boats, model boats, dragon boating, waka ama, raft racing and lots of ducks!

St Andrews Golf Course

A well-established and respected golf course that opened1913. It’s location and setting is near perfect, with some holes hugging the Waikato River.

Artspost

Housed in Hamilton’s historic Post Office, Artpost is a lovely space comprising of three constantly changing galleries and a gift shop showcasing local pieces and artists.

Hamilton Mountain Bike Track

Free to enjoy, this 11km single track offers a variety of surfaces to keep the rider thinking, plus jumps and obstacles for those more confident riders! The track is open all year round, but be prepared to get a bit muddy over the wetter months.

Hamilton Cycleway 

Hamilton offers an extensive network of cycle routes along roads, through parks and along the river. The Hamilton City website provides a downloadable map to highlight the different options.

Lake District Adventures

The place to come to experience kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, mountain biking and even a night time guided glowworm kayak tour.

 

Daytrips From Hamilton

Raglan

This laid-back surf town is less than an hour from Hamilton and a great option for a daytrip or even longer. Raglan offers so much for visitors to see and the do, the beach is one of the best surf spots in NZ and here you can learn to surf like the pros. There’s also Bridal Veil Falls, bush walks, inlet swimming, parks, shopping, cafes and restaurants. It’s got a great bohemian vibe that makes you feel relaxed as soon as you start to stroll.

Hobbiton Movie Set

Only 45 minutes from Hamilton you can step right into Peter Jacksons Hobbiton movie set that featured in Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. Wander in awe and see for yourself the hobbit holes, scenes and rambling paths of The Shire, for movie lovers this daytrip is a must.

Waitomo Caves

 Situated1 hour from Hamilton, the Waitomo area is renowned for it’s cave systems and glowworms and is a highlight on many NZ itineraries. A little over an hour from downtown Hamilton, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to exploring the caves, from leisurely boat rides through to adrenaline filled black water rafting and abseiling experiences.

Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park

In under an hour from Hamilton, you can view New Zealand’s national bird the Kiwi in a nocturnal setting. This wildlife sanctuary houses an extensive collection of native birds and reptiles and allows you to get close to the action and see everything that’s going on. Time your visit around feeding times as it offers a fun and rare perspective on how these creatures operate.

Te Aroha

This former spa and gold mining town sits at the foot of the Kaimai Ranges. The town is scattered with quaint and delightful shops, cafes and eateries. The area is famous for being the world's only natural hot soda water geyser – with 28,000 litres erupting out of the ground every day. Relax in the open-air leisure pools and take in the ambience of this charming town.

Mangapohue Natural Bridge

This easy 20 minute walk will see you discover an impressive 17m-high natural limestone arch with a stalactite-studded ceiling; the remains of an ancient cave system. If you visit at night you’ll see glow worms and sometimes bats. This walk can be joined with others in the area.
