Whangarei and the wider region boasts an aquatic playground of 100 beaches, pristine harbours and off-shore islands. Enjoy the world’s best sub-tropical diving, stunning walkways, or wander among an impressive array of galleries and cafes where international yachts moor near the centre of town.

Whangarei Town Basin

When staying in Whangarei the town basin is an absolute must do. With so much to see and do, including a 4.2km loop walk with art and sculptures dotted around, coffee shops, craft shops and ice cream.

Whangarei Quarry Gardens

These gardens are a wonderful free entry (donation welcomed) garden, boasting safe, beautiful walks, exotic plants, bubbling streams, paths through old quarry ruins and a cafe to sit and enjoy a coffee. At only 5 minutes drive from our Whangarei motel.

Whangarei Falls

These beautiful falls are close to the city and offer easy, safe walking tracks out to the falls. There’s ample parking space and great photo opportunities, especially after a rainfall.

Mount Manaia Track

A great walk (approx. 40 mins –1.5 hours) with well maintained wide walking tracks to the top of Mt Manaia. Upon reaching the top you’re rewarded with views over the Whangarei Heads and through to Marsden Point.

Kiwi North, Kiwi House and Museum

This wonderful heritage park and kiwi house allows visitors to view kiwi and tuatara in their natural environment. Day is transformed into night inside the state of the art Kiwi house and Kiwi are fed three times a day, if you go at feeding time you are likely to see them. At only 9 minutes drive from your Whangarei accommodation its a great place to take the kids. 

Claphams Clocks – The National Clock Museum

An interesting and eclectic collection of clocks and watches from around the world - from cuckoo clocks to Thomas the Tank engine and everything in between. Please allow enough time (excuse the pun).

Abbey Caves

If you are up for the challenge of exploring caves on your own (ie no commercial guiding), then this is for you. Abbey Caves Reserve is made up of three significant caves that have been naturally sculptured over time; if you’re lucky you may see glowworms! Don’t forget a torch.

A H Reed Memorial Kauri Park

The park is situated about four km north east of central Whangarei, it’s offers a great walkway and options ideal for the family. View mature kauri trees, a spectacular waterfall and the forest canopy, plus much more. A hidden gem!

The Packard & Pioneer Museum

Come and see for yourself the largest private collection of Packard Motorcars in Australasia. Dating back to the 50’s this collection has grown tremendously over time to now include: Stationary engines, steam and traction, earthmovers, military, motorcycles and classic cars. Only 15 minutes drive from your Whangarei motel.

Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre

This recovery centre provides help, treatment and rehabilitation for injured and ill native birds so that they can be returned to the wild. Founded in 1992, the centre is run with the help of a dedicated band of volunteers. Entry is by donation as the centre is a non-profit organisation. If you’re lucky you might see a kiwi!

Skydiving Whangarei

If you’re after a skydiving experience, Skydive Ballistic Blondes is one of New Zealand’s great skydiving operators. For an adrenaline filled jump of 8,000, 10,000 or 12,000 feet then give them a call.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mt Parihaka War Memorial

Constructed in 1956, this World War II War Memorial is located at the summit of Mt Parihaka. It serves as an important cultural, spiritual and heritage symbol for all to see.

Botanica Whangarei

A great place to visit if you love the outdoors, located in heart of the city, only 3 minutes away from your Whangarei accommodation you’ll see exotic palms, orchids, bizarre cacti and succulents, fragrant subtropical plants, native ferns and filmy ferns.

Waimahanga Walkway

This is a great all weather walk for the family, approximately 4km in length. Enjoy getting up close to the mangroves that grow between sea level and the high tide line. If the tide is out, you’ll be able to see their aerial roots reaching up out of the mud.

A great option to get out into the great outdoors, make the most of an excellent network of mountain bike trails with 11 tracks over 2.3kms, from beginners to experts, there’s fun for all.

Mangawhai and Bream Bay Coast

Enjoy the myraid of beaches and bays on the Mangawhai and Bream Bay Coast.Saddle up your boogie board for the longest string of surf beaches you've ever seen. 

Tutukaka 

30 minutes from your accommodation in Whangarei to the sheltered natural harbour of Tutukaka and the beautiful beaches beyond. 

Tutukaka is the gateway to great diving, snorkelling and kayaking experiences at the famous Poor Knights Islands - a wildlife marine reserve above the water and a marine reserve below. Just along the coast, Sandy Bay is famous for its world-class surfing. Make sure you take a walk to beautiful Whale Bay - the track begins just north of Matapouri.

Waipu

A stop at Waipu is a must if you are passing. The original settlement  five shiploads of Scottish people in 1850. Their story is told at the Waipu Museum.
