6 Great Bike Trails in Nelson Tasman

The Nelson Tasman region is widely considered an excellent cycle destination offering a diverse range of cycling experiences, from leisurely coastal rides to challenging alpine trails.

The team at Bella Vista Nelson share their top bike rides that can be enjoyed year-round due to our fantastic climate with mild winters, incredible scenery in the autumn, colourful and lively landscapes during spring, and incredibly warm summers…. Any season here is a good season for cycling!

1. Tasman’s Great Taste Trail – Leisure cycling

A leisurely ride suitable for all ages and levels, offering a taste of local culture and scenery. There are amazing coastal views, cafes, vineyards, craft breweries, and the historic Spooners Tunnel along the way. You can choose a section or two and head out for a couple of hours or enjoy a multi-day biking adventure.

2. Railway Reserve and Coastal Loop – Leisure cycling

This loop connects Nelson with Stoke and Richmond. This easy rideable trail is suitable for all ages and levels, you can access parks, gardens, breweries, markets, museums, Saxton Fields, the Aquatic Centre, and Tahunanui Beach, the estuary and waterfront whilst riding past the Nelson Airport and Golf Course. There is so much to see along with way… keep your eyes on the track!

3. Maitai River trail – Leisure cycling

The Maitai River walkway is an off-road, shared pathway adjacent to the Maitai River. It is popular with day walkers, dog walkers, city workers and cyclists. You can access the trail from many locations along the river in the city centre or ride from Bella Vista Nelson. There are many places you can stop along with way for a coffee, breakfast, or lunch. Ruby’s Espresso is a must, the best brews with the best views of the Nelson Marina.

4. Coppermine Trail – Mountain biking

The full loop is best suited to fit, experienced single-track riders with full suspension mountain bikes. For those less confident simply u-turn at the top and enjoy the return ride, the way you came. This trail takes you into the backcountry right from Nelson CBD. It combines historical significance with challenging terrain and breathtaking vistas. It offers alpine climbs, panoramic views from Dun Mountain, and a thrilling descent into Maitai Valley. Once you are off the hill, there are plenty of watering holes for a cold beverage!

5. Kaiteriteri MTB Park – Mountain biking

Offers great riding for those wanting adrenaline-fueled descents or those that just enjoy riding in a stunning setting, finishing off with a swim at Kaiteriteri Beach. There is a trail for every rider, from beginners to seasoned pros. We love the park, the views are incredible and a golden beach at the end, its paradise!

6. The Heaphy Track – Mountain biking

This renowned Great Walk doubles as an exceptional multi-day mountain biking trail, winding through the varied and sometimes otherworldly terrains of Kahurangi National Park. The trail spans nearly 80km and is open to mountain bikers between May and November. This is a challenging ride through remote wilderness is best suited for well-equipped, experienced riders with solid mechanical skills.
