Fox Glacier Guiding
These chaps are in the know-how business when it comes to all things Fox Glacier. They are experts in their field and offer a great range of guided tours on the ice. Flying Fox (heli-hike), Fox It Up! (heli-ice-climbing), Fox Trail (a walk to the glacier face), & Extreme Fox (all day heli-hike) are all on the menu.
Fox Glacier River Walk
Your starting point is the car park at the end of the Glacier View Road, here you follow the River Walk Lookout Track as it makes its way towards the river, passing a great viewpoint of Fox Glacier along the way. The track continues through the forest before crossing the Fox River by a 70 m long suspension bridge that was built in 1929.
** The River Walk from the historic bridge to the intersection with the River Walk Lookout Track is closed indefinitely due to flood damage. However, the historic bridge is still open. The River Walk Lookout Track from the Glacier View Road car park is also still open but you will need to return the same way**
Fox Glacier Helicopter Flight
A helicopter ride showcasing the aerial views of the rugged peaks, frozen rivers and glacial valleys below. Enjoy the snow landing where you can get out onto the glacier.
Mount Fox Route
Located 3 km south of Fox Glacier. Mount Fox Route is a challenging climb and recommended for experienced and properly equipped trampers.
ReflectioNZ Gifts & Gallery
Showcasing a selection of NZ gifts and artworks including: souvenirs, merino garments, West Coast greenstone and New Zealand jewellery. You’ll find the perfect keepsake here.
Nearby Lake Matheson is renowned for its reflections of New Zealand's highest mountains. Lake Matheson has an excellent walking track around it for all fitness levels.
Gillespies Beach & Seal Colony
A short drive west of Fox Glacier is Gillespies Beach which was an original Gold Mining Settlement. Here you can take a walk to the Seal Colony at Galway Beach which is approx. 3 hours return. Seals congregate here during the Winter months. The remoteness and ruggedness of this area is spectacular.
Make Fox Glacier your base or starting point for the Copland Track. This is a 6-8 hour tramp each way (2 days) and takes you to the famous Welcome Flat natural hot pools. Transport is available from Fox Glacier Township.
At night take a walk through a grotto of ferns and rain forest on the Minnehaha Track located 200 metres from our motel and you will be rewarded by a spectacular show of Glow Worms, especially on a clear, dark night.
One of the most spectacular jumps in New Zealand, skydiving in this region is about as picturesque as it gets with the likes of glaciers, rainforest, Southern Alps and ocean views. The professional and highly trained staff will put all your fears at ease.
Located right next to the Bella Vista Motel the Minnehaha Track is an enjoyable short walk during the day, and even more special at night when the glowworms come out. The track follows a small stream through the rainforest and loops back on itself. Bring a torch at night to find your way but remember to switch off to see the full effect of the glowworms.
Eating & Nightlife
There are a number of options for dining around the village. The Last Kitchen, Matheson Café & High Peaks Restaurant and Bar offer quality meals and great service, also check out Bigfoot Bar & Restaurant for a good night.
