Five Dog Friendly Walks in Dunedin

Bella Vista Dunedin is pet-friendly, and we just love to meet your fur family/friends.

Garry and Robyn are well known for making a fuss of your pets and our dog Mac loves interacting with any new furry visitors.

Dunedin offers a variety of great walks in and around the city, each with its own unique charm. Whether you and your furry companion are looking for a gentle stroll or a more adventurous trek, here are five dog walks that can be easily accessed from our door on Great King Street.

1. Woodhaugh Gardens

Located just a five-minute walk in the opposite direction from Bella Vista, Woodhaugh Gardens is another fantastic option for a relaxing outing with your dog. This expansive park features a variety of attractions, including playgrounds, little bushwalks, and open grass areas. The gardens are a haven for both dogs and their owners, offering plenty of space to roam and explore. Wander through the lush greenery, listen to the birdsong, and let your dog enjoy the freedom of the open space. The park's diverse landscape includes mature trees, charming bridges, and bubbling streams, creating a delightful environment for a leisurely walk. Whether you prefer a short stroll or a more extended exploration, Woodhaugh Gardens provides a perfect setting.

2. Ross Creek Reservoir

For those seeking a slightly more strenuous walk, the Ross Creek Reservoir is an excellent choice. Start by continuing through Woodhaugh Gardens to the Upper Leith Walk, which then leads on to the Ross Creek Valley. This route takes you through native bush, offering a more immersive nature experience. The trail climbs up to one of the oldest artificial lakes in the country, providing both a physical challenge and a rewarding destination. Along the way, you'll encounter diverse flora and fauna, and your dog will love the opportunity to explore the forested paths. Once you reach the reservoir, you'll be greeted with beautiful views over the city. It's a perfect spot to take a break, enjoy the scenery, and perhaps even have a picnic with your furry friend.

3. Signal Hill Reserve Walk

For the most ambitious of walkers, the Signal Hill Reserve Walk presents a challenging yet rewarding adventure. Begin your journey at Logan Park and follow the trails uphill. The climb to Signal Hill is steep, but the effort is well worth it. As you ascend, you'll pass through diverse landscapes, including native bush and open grasslands. Your dog will enjoy the variety of terrains and the new scents along the way. Once you reach the top, you'll be treated to panoramic views overlooking Dunedin, the Pacific Ocean, the Otago Harbour, and the Peninsula. The sight is truly breathtaking, providing a sense of accomplishment and a perfect photo opportunity. Spend some time at the summit, taking in the expansive vistas before making your way back down.

4. Forrester Park

For those who prefer not to walk but still want to give their dog some exercise, Forrester Park Dog Exercise Area is a great option. Located just an eight-minute drive up North East Valley, this park is specifically designed for dogs to run and play off-leash. It's a fantastic place for your dog to socialise with other canines and burn off some energy. If you do feel like a walk, Forrester Park is also the starting point for another great trail up Bethune’s Gully to Mount Cargill. This hike offers more excellent views of Dunedin and beyond, making it a versatile destination. Whether you're in the mood for a relaxing playtime at the park or a more strenuous hike, Forrester Park provides options for both.

5. Larnach Castle

Larnach Castle is just a 30-minute drive away and is an ideal day to take with your dog. While dogs aren’t allowed inside the castle, they’re welcome on-lead throughout the expansive grounds and internationally recognised gardens. Wander through lush native bush, manicured lawns, and themed garden areas with stunning views over the Otago Peninsula. It’s a relaxing, scenic outing for both you and your dog. After your walk, enjoy a coffee or light lunch at the castle café’s pet-friendly outdoor seating. The castle grounds offer plenty of space to explore, and the fresh peninsula air makes for a refreshing break from the city. A visit to Larnach Castle is more than just a walk with your dog– it’s a chance to soak in history, gardens, and views, with your best friend by your side.

We’d love to host you here at our dog-friendly Dunedin accommodation. The best option is to book online for the best price!

Please carefully review our pet policy before booking to understand all the rules and restrictions:

  • Please book directly with the motel: As we prefer to keep those with pets on the ground floor, we must check room availability for you.  We also prefer to check what pets you are bringing so the correct size room is allocated. We rarely restrict pets.
  • Cleanliness and Behaviour: Noting that your pet is allowed to stay in your motel units, they must be clean, well-behaved, and house-trained.
  • Cleanup: Guests are responsible for cleaning up after their pets in all areas of the motel.
  • Consider bringing essentials: Bring your pet's favourite toys, bedding, and food to make them feel more comfortable.
  • Leash or Carrier: Pets must be kept on a leash or in a carrier when outside rooms.
  • Respect other guests: Please be very mindful of other guests and their comfort levels.
  • Supervision: We prefer that pets are not left unattended in the room unless it is in a crate. Do advise the office staff if your pet is in the room alone so that if there are any issues, we can go and check on the pet. We do have a pet-sitting service – just ask us at the office.
  • Dog Walking Routes: Maps or information about nearby dog walking areas can be obtained at reception.

Finally, please also note that while Dunedin Bella Vista is pet friendly, not every Bella Vista is pet friendly.

Note: If the pet causes excessive mess or damage, additional cleaning fees may apply. This will be added to your account or charged to your credit card after discussion with those concerned.
