Top 10 Things to Do in Oamaru with Kids

When we lived in Auckland, we were spoilt for choice when it came to things to do with kids, but it always seemed to involve annual passes, ticketed attractions, and hopping from one facility to another.

Sure, there was always something going on, but we started to notice how little room there was for imagination, or for our kids to just make something out of nothing.

That all changed when we visited Oamaru!

We first came down for a family trip in 2019 and instantly fell in love. One of our first stops was Moeraki Boulders / Kaihinaki, where our kids ran barefoot along the beach, climbed over the rocks, and lost themselves in the moment. And for the first time in ages, we weren’t hovering over them or scanning for danger; we were relaxed, they were free, and we just knew. This was where we were meant to be!

Fast forward to now: we’re proud to call Oamaru home. We’re a family of four with two school-aged kids, and we are the proud operators of Bella Vista Motel Oamaru, right in the heart of the town that gave us the lifestyle we didn’t know we were missing.

We’ve explored every playground, beach, trail and hidden gem within reach, and we’re excited to share our top 10 family-friendly things to do in Oamaru and the wider Waitaki region. These are the places our kids ask to go back to again and again. They don’t need fancy tickets - just a bit of curiosity and maybe a packed lunch.

1. Spot the Blue Penguins at Dusk

Watching those little penguins waddle home each evening after a day at sea is magical. Our kids' eyes light up every time we visit the Blue Penguin Colony, and we never feel we have to hover. It's safe, enthralling, and truly Kiwi. Tip: Bring a jacket and arrive early for the prime spots. Distance from Bella Vista: Just a 3-minute drive.

2. Wander Through the Victorian Precinct & Steampunk HQ

Our family adores this quirky neighbourhood with its heritage buildings, creative shops, and playful Steampunk installations. It feels like stepping into a different world.

Steampunk HQ is always a highlight, especially for our son. He absolutely loves the hands-on experience, from the button-pushing to the sound effects, flashing lights, and strange inventions, it’s weird in the best possible way. Every time we visit, he finds something new to marvel at (and it’s hard to drag him out!). It’s part museum, part interactive playground and totally unforgettable.

3. Run Wild at Friendly Bay Playground & Story Book Trail

If you want to tire out the kids quickly, this is the spot. There’s a flying fox, a pirate ship, water play, bike tracks, and grassy picnic zones perfect for both action and rest.

Just nearby, you’ll also find the Story Book Trail, a hidden gem that winds through the grassy area behind the playground. It’s easily accessible, away from main roads, and gives kids a bit of safe exploring space while you grab a coffee from The Galley Café, sit back, and soak it all in.

Don’t forget to check out the story behind the old boat beside the playground, it's a fun little slice of local history!

4. Adventure at Elephant Rocks

These massive limestone formations are straight out of a storybook. Our kids turn into little explorers the moment we arrive at the Elephant Rocks — climbing, hiding, imagining, and running free.

One of our favourite family traditions when we visit is to bring along a painted rock to hide somewhere in the landscape. It adds an extra bit of fun (and a sense of mystery for the next person who finds it!). We’ve even started offering painted rocks in our Oamaru motel from our garden for our guests - should you wish to decorate your own, we have paint pens available on request at the office.

It’s a small gesture that makes for a memorable outing and helps families leave a little magic behind for someone else to discover.

5. Meander Around Oamaru’s Harbour & Weekend Markets

Weekends bring a relaxed buzz to the harbour area, and one of our favourite spots is the Oamaru Farmers’ Market, held every Sunday morning.

It’s a great place to grab fresh local produce, try something delicious from the wide range of food stalls, and enjoy live music while the kids run around. There’s a real community feel. You’ll often bump into locals chatting over their coffee and pastries.

After the market, take a stroll along the harbour, watch the boats come and go, or let the kids spot sea birds along the shoreline. It’s an easy, low-key morning that always leaves us smiling (and full!).

6. Climb & Explore the Moeraki Boulders / Kaihinaki

Another top family favourite in Oamaru - the giant round boulders, which are a playground in themselves. Kids scramble over them, discover starfish in rockpools, and chase waves. And we love not fretting over their safety. It's just that relaxed.

7. Go Fossil Hunting & Explore the Geopark

The Waitaki Whitestone Geopark is full of fascinating spots to explore and it’s way more fun (and hands-on) than you might expect.

You can dig for your own fossils, learn about the ancient marine life that once covered this land, and see first-hand what’s come out of the ground, from giant penguins to prehistoric sea creatures.

It’s also a great way to introduce kids to local Māori history, with sites like Maerewhenua Rock Art where you can view ancient drawings and learn about the stories behind them. Whether you're stopping at one site or making a day of it, this is the perfect mini roadie. Pack some snacks, hit a few highlights, and let curiosity lead the way.

8. Laze & Picnic in Kurow — Past Waitaki Dam

Take a short drive out to Kurow for a peaceful change of pace with plenty of charm.

Our favourite family tradition is to snap a photo with the giant Richie McCaw sign, a fun, quirky reminder of Kiwi pride and rugby legend status. Then, we head to the Waitaki Dam area nearby for a picnic by the water.

It’s a great spot for the kids to run around, explore, and enjoy nature while you relax and take in the scenery. Don’t forget to pack some snacks and your camera!

9. Hop Aboard the Oamaru Steam Train

This heritage steam train is an absolute favourite in our family, especially with our son, who begs to hop on whenever it’s running (which is usually weekends and school holidays). It’s a short but scenic trip from the old station down to the Penguin Colony and the experience is like stepping back in time.

The drivers are always incredibly friendly and full of knowledge not just about the trains and tracks, but also about local history, wildlife, and even sea lions, which sometimes make an appearance near the colony!

Our son has been lucky enough to be invited to “drive” it a couple of times. A dream come true. It’s the kind of local magic that makes Oamaru so special.

10. Be Inspired at Local Family Events and Activities

From school fairs to St John Youth events, there’s always something happening. Our kids have loved being part of St John Youth, racking up nearly 100 community service hours and learning how to care for others in a real, authentic way.

Or, if you prefer, you can choose to just take it easy at our motel. We have plenty of garden space, a picnic area, and an outdoor BBQ that’s free to use, plus outdoor gaming equipment available for the kids to enjoy.

If the weather isn’t playing nice, no worries we also offer a mini library and board games on request, perfect for cozy family time indoors.
