LOCATION

Location Highlights

Bella Vista Napier Motel is situated in a central CBD location, four minutes' walk from town. Marine Parade fronts onto a sweeping stretch of the Pacific Ocean from which we are located only a matter of metres; the beach walks and nearby restaurants and attractions give the city a real holiday resort atmosphere.  For conferences and special events, the Napier RSA is right across the road. The War Memorial Conference Centre is a pleasant three quarters of a kilometre stroll along the seaside walkway.  The Municipal Theatre is also sometimes used as a conference facility and Bella Vista Motel is an easy walk from this venue too. For sports events, we are less than one kilometre from McLean and Nelson parks, and at the end of the activities freshen up at your motel which is within 300 metres of watering holes and eateries for all tastes, while a half kilometre will get the "culturally minded" to the Napier Municipal Theatre. Look out your window during Art Deco week and you will be convinced you have been transported to the 1930s, such is the number of passers-by in period costume and vintage cars. We are right in the midst of it all!

OUR STORY

Introducing your hosts, Jimmy & Wendy

Jimmy and Wendy have owned and operated Bella Vista Napier since September 2018.  They both arrived in New Zealand from China in the early 2000s, studying in Auckland for 6 years, before moving to Napier. Loving the wonderful Hawkes Bay lifestyle, they settled in Napier, become New Zealand residents, married and are proud parents of four wonderful children.

In 2012 they purchased a local dairy called Arkwights Corner Store, coincidentally just down the road from the motel on Hastings Street. In operating the dairy Jimmy and Wendy were able to become part of the local community and after six years of hard work and saving, they moved their family two blocks down the road to Bella Vista.

Napier, Hawkes Bay - Your Destination

Napier is located on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, bordered by the vast Pacific Ocean. With its stunning seaside location, Napier is an ideal destination for visitors. The city is best known for its striking Art Deco architecture and world-class wines, but it also offers deep connections to Māori culture, especially across the wider Hawke’s Bay region. In recent years, newly developed cycling trails have added another layer of attraction for outdoor enthusiasts.

The history of the region dates back to the 12th century, when the sacred waka (canoe) Tākitimu arrived. Aboard was the high priest Ruawharo, who settled near present-day Māhia Beach, north of Napier. This marked the beginning of Māori settlement in the area, particularly by the iwi (tribe) Ngāti Kahungunu.

In 1769, Captain James Cook and the crew of the HMS Endeavour were likely the first Europeans to sight the East Coast. Cook named Hawke’s Bay in honor of a member of the British Admiralty. During the early 1800s, traders, whalers, and missionaries began arriving in the region. Napier itself was established in the 1850s and named after a British soldier who had served in India. Many of the city's streets reflect this colonial history, bearing names from the British Indian Empire as well as notable artists and literary figures.

Today, Napier offers a rich mix of attractions, from vineyard tours and scenic beach walks to its vibrant architectural heritage. A must-see is the Marine Parade, a picturesque waterfront promenade with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Here, visitors can also find the statue of Pania of the Reef—a beloved figure from Ngāti Kahungunu mythology. This statue is not only culturally significant but also one of New Zealand's most photographed landmarks.

Whether you're drawn to art, food, wine, or the outdoors, Napier delivers a unique and memorable experience. It's a place where history, culture, and natural beauty come together—offering something truly special for every visitor.
