Introducing your hosts, Tom and Melissa Syben
Tom and Melissa were leading busy lives in Australia, each working in family-run, customer-focused businesses. But when the opportunity to own a Bella Vista motel came along, they knew it was the perfect time to return home to New Zealand. Their hearts led them to Wānaka—a place they had cherished from many family holidays. Now, with their three boys in tow, they’ve been proudly running Bella Vista Wānaka since May 2016, combining warm hospitality with the relaxed charm of a town they love.
Lake Wānaka, Otago - Your Destination
The crystal-clear waters of Lake Wānaka, New Zealand's fourth largest lake, reflect the snow-capped peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park, whose dominant feature is Mt Aspiring, towering above a magnificent glacier-sculpted wilderness.
A wide range of attractions and adventure sports is available all within reach of Wanaka. Take a scenic cruise on the lake, sample locally made wines, or fish at one of the easily accessible spots. Alternatively, venture into the hills and mountains surrounding Wānaka. Mountain biking, tramping, and climbing are all options in this area. Wānaka is also one of New Zealand's top ski destinations, with four ski and snowboarding areas nearby.
Wānaka is an ideal location to explore the Southern Lakes region; Queenstown is a 50-minute drive (65 kms) across the Crown Range, while Cromwell (55 kms) and Alexandra (86 kms) are also only a short drive away.
Our Community Involvement
Living in a small community like Wānaka, it is important to us to support multiple local initiatives. Both our staff and volunteers in the local community and contribute in various capacities. We also endeavour to ensure we support other local businesses for all our supplies and services. Additionally, we source all our plants for our gardens from local nurseries, including our lavender from Wānaka's famous Lavender farm. We also donate some of the profits from our guest laundries to local nature initiatives.

At Bella Vista Wānaka, we aim to reduce our impact on the environment because it’s the right thing to do, ensuring its preservation for future generations. As part of this community, we want to actively contribute and play our role in protecting the environment.

We do this by striving to minimise energy consumption, reduce chemical use, eliminate plastic bags, recycle as much as possible, and prevent food waste from landfills.
Managing our company’s carbon footprint and reducing carbon emissions reflect our commitment to a sustainable future and our goal of being the most sustainable and environmentally friendly motel in Wānaka. Measuring our footprint helps us understand what creates carbon output and allows us to develop ways to reduce it.
